An EMTP® license is provided as a license token1,2, also called License Key or Activation Key.
A license pool is established with a concurrency limit3, determining the maximum number of simultaneous users. For instance, a token with a concurrency limit of 3 has three tokens available, allowing three users to work simultaneously with EMTP®.
EMTP® is offered with the following types of licenses.
1. Cloud
For a Cloud license:
- The user can activate the EMTP® token on his/her computer and can deactivate it to move it to a different computer. Two methods are available for activation: 1) online via a direct internet connection to the user's computer; 2) offline, in which case a request file can be transmitted indirectly through another computer to the license server.
- The token can be manually released from a specific computer using EMTP® Activation Utility. Once released, the same token can be reused on another computer.
- EMTP® may operate for a fixed period of seven days without any internet connection. This period is referred to as the grace period. An internet connection is required at the end of the grace periodto validate the tokenactivation.
- The primary advantage is to ensure the consistent availability of EMTP® for the user.
2. Floating Cloud
For a Floating Cloud license:
- An internet connection is required to activate and retain the EMTP® token.
- The token is automatically released when EMTP® is closed by the user or if the internet connection is lost for more than 20 minutes, for example, if the computer is turned off. At this point, the token becomes available to other users. When EMTP® is started again, the EMTP® Activation Utility will attempt to access a token. If one is available, EMTP® starts normally; if none is available, EMTP® cannot start.
- An internet connection is always required while using EMTP®.
3. Node-lock (Stand alone)
The Node-lock license is tied to a specific computer and can operate offline after activation, without requiring an internet connection. To deactivate EMTP® and activate on a different computer, a procedure must be followed to unbind the license from the initial device. This procedure requires 72 hours to complete, is subject to PGSTech's approval, and is contingent on an active maintenance contract with applicable additional fees.
4. Network license
The Network license is a floating on-premises license system. A License Manager is installed on a server and accessible to users via the local network. Tokens are accessed and released in the same way as Floating Cloud licenses. The server must be connected to the internet. Licenses may be accessed via VPN when a computer is not on-premises.
5. Trial license
PGSTech may provide trial licenses to users for testing purposes, for learning about EMTP® features and during courses organized by PGSTech. The trial licenses are of Cloud type and have a limited duration.
Trial licenses are reserved for non-commercial use of EMTP®.
6. Educational license
PGSTech can provide Educational licenses for universities at undergraduate and graduate levels. These licenses are generally available at no cost, but do not include all EMTP® components and toolboxes. Supplementary components and toolboxes can be purchased separately.
Educational licenses are reserved for non-commercial use of EMTP® by accredited or recognized universities, technical colleges or other institutions that provide teaching or instructional services (as determined by PGSTech in its discretion), the whole in support of on-campus classroom instruction and academic research.
The university requesting an educational license must accept and sign the University Program Membership Agreement of EMTP®.
- EMTP® usage on virtual machines is not allowed, but PGSTech can make exceptions under certain conditions and for an additional fee.
- The license activation procedure for each of the license types described above is provided to the user during EMTP® download and installation.
- License tokens may be issued to users by PGSTech upon the execution of the appropriate contractual documentation with PGSTech.
- The term token is used as an abbreviation for license token.
- The concurrency limit is established in the contractual terms.
