NYPA's AGILe & EMTP Collaboration: New York's Digital Twin

Our EMTP® team has started an exciting and innovative project with the Advanced Grid Innovation Laboratory for Energy (AGILe) team at the New York Power Authority (NYPA).

AGILe has identified the need to develop a scalable and resilient architecture to run real-time (RT), soft real-time (SRT), and offline simulations for large-scale power grids. A platform capable of co-simulating  EMT and Phasor models with an ensemble set such as EMTP® (as the main simulation tool), PSS/E, PSCAD, RTDS and Opal-RT will be developed.   A CIM database with geographic information system (GIS) cooridnates of the New York State network will be created using existing EMTP import tools.

This project, led by our EMTP® team, aims to develop the above architecture that pushes the boundaries of any existing co-simulation platform in the field of power systems.
Some of the technical challenges are as follows:

  • Running extremely large grid models.

  • Applying parallel computing in EMTP® using several servers via optic fibers and FPGA communications.

  • Developing a data exchange broker that orchestrates the interactions among the different simulation platforms.

  • Creating a CIM database using data from typical planning tools (e.g. ASPEN, PSS/E).

In summary, EMTP® and NYPA are working together to simulate extremely large grids with different degrees of flexibility and advanced database organization.
